When is Guinn Elementary School Tutoring?
Guinn elementary school tutoring is done every Tuesday and Thursday from 11:05-1:30pm. There are different shifts depending on the volunteers schedules, but is also very strict due to the safety of the students.
What is being done during Guinn Elementary School Tutoring?
During the three hours volunteers are helping elementary school students who are english second language learners. With reading comprehension, with spelling, and grammar. The students are different grades and are at different paces. With the different paces they each have binders to complete, with the help of volunteers. They are motivated each time through stickers and with 20 stickers they are able to receive a prize. With being a long term volunteer one is able to build a relationship with the students and to see their progress of their language skills.
How did I find out about School Tutoring and my experience?
The community service was found through my local church in where as a church we wanted to help the local community through evangelism, but also to serve the schools because our church sees the importance of the next generation. Our church partnered with Guinn Elementary school to help the students through English Second learner program. The leader of the tutoring asked me once to try tutoring because they needed a sub, after I went and came back to reflect I really enjoyed the experience. There were times that one had to repeat again and again, but once you see the child's joy in understanding the concept it makes one joyful too. Also having come from ESL background it made glad that I am able to give back nearly the same way people have helped me in the past.
